CONGRATULATIONS TEAM PIEROGI (AND TEAM PLACEK)!

TEAM PIEROGI started preparing these delicious Polish dumplings in mid-January, getting together on Mondays and Wednesdays in Kanty’s Kitchen. Over the past several years we have reached out to others, both women and men, who have wanted to learn the art of pierogi making and still others who wanted to volunteer to benefit our church. Msgr Bob Golombek has also been a great helper, demonstrating his learned skills of rolling and filling! A count of the Team, led by Kanty’s own Pierogi Queen Diane ‘Shorty’ Czajka, is well over 20. This year about half way through Lent our large freezer stopped working, and after several attempts to save it, we were advised that nothing more could be done and that we would need to invest in a new one. Locating a new freezer took a little time, and our good friend Sr Johnice was able to provide temporary freezer space.  (Below: Diane placing pierogi in the new freezer; Deacon Rick blessing the freezer.)

The final count for pierogi was 11,438, and for placek: over 900! We are so grateful not only to our parish family for their support in purchasing pierogi and placek for themselves, family and friends, but also to those who came from our neighboring churches as well as all areas of the City and beyond…we even had a family from Vienna, VA come by on Palm Sunday to attend Mass, buy some pierogi and placek, and enjoy lunch with us! We have many repeat customers from year to year and look forward to seeing them and catching up. Many alumni also supported the sale, and the conversation always revolved around the good times they remembered having at St John Kanty School.

So, until we meet again with pierogi press in hand…
