St. John Kanty School-Lyceum building to be converted into apartments

An Historical Note: The Infant Jesus (see photo) was used for the first time since 1955, when on January 12 a devastating 3 alarm fire occurred. The significance of the statue is that it is the only remaining piece from the blaze. It was recently found in time to display in church this year…it was not repainted but simply ‘cleaned up’.

The following information is taken from the SJK Centennial Book from 1992:

“On January 12, 1955 a second fire (the first fire was in the sanctuary in 1948) raged through the church. The three alarm fire engulfed the interior of the church, still decorated for the Christmas season. Ten stained glass windows burst from extreme heat pressure, and organ pipes fell to the church floor. The fire also destroyed the wooden main altarpiece, two side altars, murals and statuary. Remarkably, the life size sculpture of The Last Supper, originally set in the main altar, was saved. On that fateful evening of the fire parishioners gathered in the Lyceum, which would become the site of daily and Sunday Masses. Under the guidance of Msgr Joseph Glapinski, the commitment was made to rebuild a new church.” The church was closed for over one year for renovations.

We are very grateful to those who have scheduled Masses for 2021. It is just the beginning of the year, and of course…many openings remain. Weekend and week day Masses are available. The Mass stipend is $15 per Mass. Please contact the rectory to schedule your intentions. You may also place your intentions, with the stipend amount, in the collection basket or mail in your intentions. You can also click on this link: http://www.saintjohnkanty.com/mass-intentions/.

Weekday Masses are held in the church Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 8:30 a.m. All are welcome to attend!

THANK YOU EVERYONE for your continued weekly support of our Parish…we greatly appreciate it!

Be sure to look at our prayer list in the bulletin…there are so many people to pray for! Please remember to pray for those who you promised to, those who have no one to pray for them, and those requests that remain silent out of fear or embarrassment.

If you have a name to add to our parish prayer list, just call the parish office (893-0412) during regular office hours.

HAVE A WONDERFUL WEEK…GO BILLS!
