Mary Garden with Spring blooms

HAVE A FEW HOURS TO SPARE? Our small gardening committee of three parishioners has already been busy with some grounds and garden cleanup, as well as planting colorful annuals and the bulbs that decorated our church at Easter. When the planting is done, garden and grounds maintenance takes over. It takes a few hours a week on a regular basis to maintain a welcoming appearance as well as set a good example for the neighborhood. If you have a couple of hours to spare, either on a Wednesday or a Saturday morning (weather permitting), you are welcome to spend a few hours with us caring for the church and grounds…there is always something to do, and many hands make light work!

SOME VERY EARLY HISTORY ON THE ARCHITECT OF ST JOHN KANTY: Several weeks ago Mr Chuck LaChiusa, owner of the electronic site Buffalo Architectural History, visited SJK to take photos for inclusion on his site, which includes not only many of Buffalo’s churches and historic buildings, but also those churches that are now closed. During Chuck’s visit the question was posed as to the architect of our church. After a phone call to the Diocese of Buffalo to learn if the information was in their archives – it was not – a trip was made to the main library in downtown Buffalo to research the question. Unfortunately, no information was found there either, but nevertheless, it was an interesting visit!. Not to be discouraged, it was time to connect with Greg Witul, noted stained glass historian, friend of Buffalo’s East side and author of many articles for The Am-Pol Eagle. Well…Greg found an answer, which is described in the current issue of the weekly journal, and here is the link: http://ampoleagle.com/another-polish-church-turns-years-old-p10948-202.htm. Thanks Greg for tracking down the information on the very early history of our church, probably the first time it has been revealed to present day parishioners and interested parties.

Also…be sure to check out the Buffalo Architectural History site: http://buffaloah.com/a/swin/101/tc.html for a virtual tour of Saint John Kanty and many other local churches.

IF YOU ARE READING THIS NEWS BLAST, YOU KNOW THAT A NEW AND IMPROVED CHURCH WEBSITE IS UP AND RUNNING! We are proud to say that the improved church website made its debut during our 125th Anniversary year and thank SJK grad Christopher Byrd for creating a pleasing and user friendly site that we at St John Kanty can be proud to be a part of in today’s electronic world!. If you have not already done so, we invite you to sign up to receive news automically via email…just scroll to the bottom of the home page and enter your email address.

The Mass ending our yearlong 125th Anniversary will take place at 1 p.m. on Sunday, November 19, 2017. Bishop Richard Malone will be the principal celebrant, assisted by clergy who have graduated from Saint John Kanty School. Immediately following the Mass hors d’oeuvres, dinner and entertainment by Rare Vintage will take place at The Millennium Buffalo on Walden Avenue, Cheektowaga. Tickets for the banquet will go on sale in the Fall and will also be available via Pay Pal on the church website (www.saintjohnkanty.com). The ticket cost is $40.00, and it has been the objective of the 125th Anniversary Committee from its first meeting in April 2016 to keep the ticket cost reasonable while still presenting a quality and memorable event. Through fundraisers earmarked for the Anniversary, as well as advertising in the program booklet, we feel our objective has been accomplished. What YOU can do to make the Mass and dinner an event to remember is spread the word to family, friends, classmates and acquaintances who have a past connection to SJK and may also be interested in returning to Saint John Kanty not only for Mass but an evening of reminiscing, good food and dancing.
